I've got two sound cards, one on board, and a seperate card. The one on board I use for my room, and the card I use in conjunction with my dvd player and TV output for 5 channel sound in the tv room.

I can only get one sound card to work, and am not sure how I would go about getting both to work.

I'm a linux newbie, but would be very appreciative for any help.

Well, you need to tell us some more information! What are the sound cards? What distribution of linux are you using? Are you using ALSA or OSS (it's OK if you don't know)? What are the contents of /etc/modules.conf (this is where loadable kernel modules, such as sound card drivers, are configured)?

Here are the relevant lines from my /etc/modules.conf in Mandrake 9:
above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1

I guess if I was going to add another card, I'd add a line like:
alias sound-slot-1 modulename

... where modulename was the name of the kernel module that supported my second sound card.
