I'm pretty new to Linux, but already I see its potential.

I am wondering, how can I find out if i have a particular program/utility installed on my system.

For instance, I want to know if gzilla (the browser) is installed!?

If its Red Hat then it will have the LOCATE program.

So type in locate gzilla or whatever your looking for.

Otherwise you can use the find program, type man find for more information.

I am using Mandrake 8.2. Is there some way I can view what applications I have already got installed and what they do??

I vaguely remember (from little experience a year or so ago) that there was a utility that i could use to view what packages (which are the equivalent of RPMs in mandrake, yes??) that were on my system and a short description.

I'm just warming up again this time, and I have no idea of what application does what. I find linux app names to be rather abstract mostly.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but rpm -qa will list all installed packages and rpm -qi <package> will give some info and a short description of what the package does. There's probably a GUI front-end to show installed package info but I plead ignorance.
