how come the fonts are so messed up in linux? i know fonts havent been good in the past, but surely they have done some improvements since? im using mandrake 9 which looks nice but theres always dodgy looking fonts on it.. programs like amsn suck as well, the writing is either huge or just looking dodgy.. not polished enough i spose
anyone wanna explain what the deal is? or how i can make it look nice myself?

You need to install some truetype fonts, and if your video card supports the xrender extension you need to use AA on the fonts. Mandrakes control center has a font installer that will install MS truetype fonts from a windows partition and there is a sourceforge page with the MS core fonts if you don't have a windows partition.
