Post subject:  kernel recompile on rh8

Having some problems recompiling the kernel on a rh8 install.

I've taken the config from /boot/config-2.4.18-14 (i presume this is the config the system is installed with), removed pcmcia support (will compile my own version later) and added in wireless networking.

make dep,clean,bzImage all run fine, but when I next try to run make modules I get;

Quote:
gcc -E -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/local/src/linux-2.4.19/include -traditional -DCHIP=71
0 fake7.c | grep -v '^#' | perl -s script_asm.pl -ncr7x0_family
script_asm.pl : Illegal combination of registers in line 72 : MOVE CTEST7 & 0x
ef TO CTEST7
Either source and destination registers must be the same,
or either source or destination register must be SFBR.
make[2]: *** [sim710_d.h] Error 255
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/linux-2.4.19/drivers/scsi'
make[1]: *** [_modsubdir_scsi] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/linux-2.4.19/drivers'
make: *** [_mod_drivers] Error 2

Anyone got any ideas? Driving me nuts.

Ta

I believe it is (2.4.18 is default with RH8). I haven't had a chance to install RH8, I've been busy with W2K stuff for the last few months + my box has been at a client's site on evaluation.

I am hoping to get it back this Friday and then I'll install RH8. I might try taking the default config and compile 2.4.19 to see if I get any errors.

In the meantime I would suggest that you compile using the original config in 2.4.19. Take notes from the 2.4.18 config if you like and try re-compiling. :)

After a few days of mucking around and trying to come up with a solution I came up with the a fix..

I removed scsi support (I didn't require it, and that was the module it kept falling over on) from the kernel and the make modules (& modules_install) worked fine.

There's probably more to it than that, but seemed to do the trick for me.

Cool, good to hear that you've got it sorted. :)
